Biography

Edel Murphy is the Development Officer for the HRB Irish Primary Care Clinical Trials Network.

Edel holds a BSc from University College Dublin, an MSc in Cell Biology and the Higher Diploma in Education (NUI Galway). In 2012, she graduated with an MSc in Clinical Research from NUI Galway.   After a short spell teaching at second level, Edel had a successful career for a number of years in the technology industry, as an information designer/project manager and later, as an operations manager.  She then ran her own project management company, managing a wide variety of projects for clients in the public, private and voluntary sectors.   Edel first worked as a research project manager with NUI Galway in 2005 and has since worked in a number of different disciplines within the University, including General Practice, the School of Nursing and Midwifery and Economics. Her research interests include patient and public involvement in research, research methodology, with a particular interest in systematic reviews, and dementia and palliative care.  

Research Interests

Edel's research interests include dementia and palliative care, research methodology, with a particular interest in systematic reviews, and patient and public involvement in research. 

In addition to her role on the HRB Irish Primary Care Clinical Trials Network, Edel currently holds a HRB Cochrane Fellowship (2013-2015) and is completing a systematic review on palliative care interventions in advanced dementia.

Edel most recently worked in the School of Business and Economics, managing the start-up of a national survey to establish the preferences of the public with regard to health and wellbeing. She previously worked on the SPHERE Follow-Up study, a 6 year follow-up to the original SPHERE study, a randomised controlled trial of tailored practice and patient care plans designed to improve outcomes for patients with coronary heart disease.

Edel is currently involved in a number of systematic reviews on different topics, contributing systematic review expertise to the review teams.
