Dáithí Ó Madáin and Lisa Ní Fhlatharta both of whom are Language Executives with Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilgeat NUI Galway, work periodically with the Secretary and the Secretary's Office to ensure that the University fulfils its statutory obligations in relation to the Irish language as outlined in the University’s language scheme, the University Statutes and relevant legislation.
The Language Scheme is a requirement of the Official Languages Act 2003. It is also the responsibility of the Language Executives, operating under the direction of the University Authority, to facilitate the creation of an exemplary bilingual campus as envisaged in the University’s Strategic Plan. They have a central role in the formulation and implementation of the Language Schemes, facilitating their implementation and providing advice and support to staff members regarding practical implementation issues. Lisa is also secretary to An Coiste Seasta um Cháilíocht Teanga which advises the University on Irish language proficiency requirements for certain academic and administrative university posts.
