The University’s commitment to the Irish language was first set out in the University College Galway Act 1929and this was reiterated in the University College Galway (Amendment) Act 2006which states that one of the prinicipal aims of the university is "the provision of education ... through the medium of the Irish langauge".  The University’s Strategic Plan goes even further and it mandates the University to respond to the needs of the Irish speaking community regionally and nationally as a living community.

The Secretary is the member of the University Management Team who is tasked with ensuring that the University fulfills its obligations in relation to Irish.  He works closely with Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge and monitors the University’s performance against the Language Scheme, which public bodies are required to prepare under the Official Languages Act 2003.  The NUI Galway Language Scheme 2012-2015 details the approaches and efforts undertaken to promote the use of Irish in the daily business of the University.

NUI Galway Language Scheme 2012-2015

The NUI Galway Language Scheme 2012-2105 has been launched.  This scheme lays out the University's commitments to providing Irish language services to our staff and students over the coming years. It is the result of a process of consulting with staff around the University, with input from both the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, and the Language Commissioner's Office.

The main feature of the new scheme is to ensure there is an active offer of Irish in a range of services on campus. The new G symbol has been created so as to make it clear to Irish speakers where they can avail of services through the medium of Irish. This symbol is directed primarily at those places of significant contact with the public, where a high standard of service through Irish is available.  For further information about the G symbol and to download it go to: www.nuigalway.ie/sceim_na_hollscoile/thegsymbol.html

Lisa Ní Fhlatharta and Daithí Ó Madáin from the University's Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, will be working closely with support services to help implement the scheme's guidelines and to increase the visibility of  Irish language services.
