Karzan Sabah D.Ahmed Memorial Research Bursary Scheme

To recognise and honour Karzan Sabah D.Ahmed, the National Parks & Wildlife Service is delighted to announce their partnership with University of Galway in launching the Karzan Sabah D.Ahmed Memorial Research Bursary Scheme. Karzan was a PhD student in the Applied Ecology Unit, School of Natural Sciences who died tragically along with his family in 2021.

  • The Bursary will run as a summer research programme at University of Galway and support two undergraduate students to undertake research on HNV (High Nature Value) farming with a particular focus on invertebrate diversity.
  • The bursary which will run over a three month period (June/July/August) has been set up to encourage undergraduate students in their 3rd or 4th year of study on relevant programmes and disciplines in any Irish higher education institution.
  • The Bursary will select two students to participate in the programme each year.  The students will be supervised by an academic team within the College of Science & Engineering at University of Galway and housed in a suitable University of Galway laboratory for the duration of their placement. Each of the two Programme participants will receive total bursary of €3,000  + €750 for travel expenses. 

Timeline: The application process will open online in March for the 2024 Programme. All applicants will be required to supply a short personal statement along with details of degree course, grades and the names of two referees as part of the application process and provide evidence that they meet the criteria.  University of Galway Dr Seamus McDermott Entrepreneurial Scholarship 

The Liffey Trust was founded in 1984 to help potential entrepreneurs and community groups to become established. The Liffey Trust wishes to award a University of Galway student with an entrepreneurial scholarship to be known as the University of Galway Dr Seamus McDermott Entrepreneurial Scholarship.

  • The Séamus McDermott Entrepreneurial Scholarship has the principal purpose of promoting the concepts of job creation, entrepreneurial development and education for life, in the minds of undergraduate students.

  • This will be awarded annually to a University of Galway registered student in the first year of their undergraduate studies, and will be renewed annually until they graduate.  

  • The total value of each scholarship shall be €9,000 (€3,000 each year or €2,250 for four years). Students will have obtained a place at University of Galway will have already attained the necessary academic qualifications to receive this scholarship. 

Deadline: Applications will close at 5 pm on Friday 28 October 2022. Students must be in their first year of study in University of Galway for the academic year 2022/2023.  Applications will be shortlisted. The shortlisting and interview panel will consist of the Professor of Entrepreneurship & Regional Development, the Director of Entrepreneurial Development, and the Director of Development, Community, and Alumni Relations.  The top five applicants will be forwarded to the Liffey Trust by 18th November.   A prize-giving ceremony will be run on 2nd December 2022.

Applications must also provide a short 2 page CV and a document (max 1,000 words) telling us about examples in your life when you practiced entrepreneurship.  Entrepreneurship is when you act upon opportunities and ideas and transform them into value for yourself or others.  The value that is created can be financial, cultural, social or environmental.   You can include initiatives that were both successful and unsuccessful, and undertaken either on your own or with others.   What did you learn from these experiences? What difference did they make to others or to the environment? You may use your own entrepreneurial experiences to reflect on the wider role of entrepreneurship in society and our world and what you could achieve in the future.  

The scholarship will be tenable for the duration of the programme undertaken, only in University of Galway and successful candidates will be asked to contribute to a short annual report. For applications in the academic year 2022/2023 applications will open in October 2022 for students in their first year of study for the academic year 2022/2023. Annually thereafter applications will open in October of each year.

Medtronic Technical Fellow Scholarship 2022

The Medtronic Technical Fellow Scholarship aims to facilitate equal opportunity in engineering by offering financial support to under-represented socio-economic groups in university.

Medtronic Technical Fellow Scholarship will support a student with an award of €6,000 for each year of their study. The scholarship scheme will be open to the following cohorts applying to GY408 Biomedical, GY405 Mechancial, or GY401 Undenominated Engineering*.

The scholarship is targeted at students who are socio-economically disadvantaged and who are from one or more of the following target groups that have low participation rates in higher education.

  •  students from communities that are socio-economically disadvantaged or that have low levels of participation in higher education;
  • first-time mature students (23 or older on 1 January of their year of entry to higher education);
  • students with a disability;
  • members of Irish Traveller community;
  • further education and training award holders progressing to higher education;
  • lone parents (confirmed by the Department of Social Protection (DSP) as holding a long-term means-tested social welfare payment) and
  • students from ethnic minorities including University of Sanctuary who are lawfully present in the State

The application process will open online for the 2022 academic year will in September 2022.  All applicants will be required to supply a personal statement as part of the application process and to provide evidence that they meet the criteria.
