Biography

Tony is Senior Lecturer in Educational Technology and a design-based researcher in the School of Education, National University of Ireland, Galway. He is Joint Programme Director (Education) of the BA Mathematics and Education at NUIG. Tony's research interests centre on innovation and technology in education, and the potential of design-based research (DBR) as a change-driven, solution-oriented research methodology in different educational contexts and settings, elective and formal. He was formerly a secondary school teacher of physical education, English, ICT, mathematics and SPHE, and a school ICT coordinator.
Tony has collaboratively undertaken design-based research with a diverse range of educational technologies in museums, schools (primary and post-primary), and post-compulsory: further and higher education. These technologies have included: mobile and blended learning; animation and digital media design; educational coding and constructionist software; augmented, mixed and virtual reality; digital storytelling; and haptic and ubiquitous computing. In September 2016, at the Conference of the International Society for Design and Development in Education (ISDDE), Utrecht, the Netherlands, Tony was elected a Fellow of the ISDDE: http://www.isdde.org. Following the ISDDE 2017 Conference, which was held at the UC Berkeley, Tony will Co-Chair ISDDE 2018, the 14th Annual ISDDE Conference, "Culture and Educational Design" at the NUI Galway, 28th-31st May 2018: https://sites.google.com/view/isdde-2018/home. He is the Proceedings Chair of the MiTE (Mobile Technology in Teacher Education) Conference. The 4th Annual MiTE Conference will be held in Galway, 19th-20th January 2018: http://www.gratek.ie/mite2018/.

Research Collaborations, Projects and Funding
Tony has supervised 8 PhDs to completion, (2 co-supervised), including 7 doctorates in design-based research/technology-enhanced learning, and helped to secure over EUR €8 million in national and European funding for educational design research projects and programmes.
He jointly leads the Quantum Tales Project (Q-Tales), funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Programme, to design and develop educational e-books with Drs. Michael Hogan, John Breslin and Bonnie Thompson Long at the NUI Galway: http://www.qtales.com/.
Tony is also the Co-Principal Investigator with Dr. Paul Flynn at NUI Galway for the REX Project (Research Expertise Exchange), funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, to design and develop an online portal to support the integration of educational academic research and teacher professional practice: http://www.researchexpertiseexchange.com/.
As part of the international research network on mobilising and transforming teacher education, led by Prof. Kevin Burden, University of Hull, Tony is Co-Principal Investigator at NUI Galway with Seán Ó Grádaigh, Sinéad Ní Ghuidhir and Dr. Brendan Mac Mahon for the DEIMP Project: Designing and Evaluating Innovative Mobile Pedagogies, funded by the European Commission (2017-2020): http://www.deimpeu.com/
With Sally McHugh, Irish Research Council Scholar, and Dr. Fiona Concannon, CELT, NUI Galway, and in partnership with Galway City Museum and local schools, Tony is also collaborating on the TECHE Project: designing technology-enhanced learning to augment cultural heritage education, and the integration of formal and informal learning. Tony is also a faculty partner in two NUIG Explore Projects, CampusCreate, supporting everyday creativity on the NUIG campus, led by Sally McHugh; and Breaking the Seal, enhancing students' engagement with the archives of the James Hardiman Library, NUIG, led by Dr. Paul Flynn. Tony collaborates with Dr. Eílis Flanagan on the design of innovative technology-enhanced learning and assessment in English education; and Dr. Brendan Mac Mahon and Dr. Tony Tracy, Huston School of Film and Digital Media, NUIG on the design of film studies within the post-primary English curriculum. With Jim Lenaghan, Chief Technical Officer, School of Education, Tony collaborates on the design of technology-enhanced learning to support creativity in education.

Tony was the educational lead in the collaborative design and development of the Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Education, the concurrent specialist mathematics and applied mathematics teaching degree at the NUI Galway. He also jointly led the design and development of the Structured PhD in Learning Sciences, NUI Galway and was the NUIG lead in the design and development of the Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching/Dioplóma Gairmiúil sa Mhatamaitic don Mhúinteoireacht (PDMT/DGMM). This two-year, part-time, blended and bilingual postgraduate programme is the national, state-funded initiative to upskill 'out-of-field' mathematics teachers in Ireland. A member of the Department of Education and Skills Monitoring Group for the PDMT/DGMM, Tony is currently undertaking design research evaluation of the programme with Prof. John O'Donoghue, Prof. Paul Conway, and colleagues at the University of Limerick, and in the PDMT/DGMM consortium of higher education institutions.

Educational Background and Qualifications
Tony completed his PhD in Computer Science (design-based research) under the supervision of Prof. Liam Bannon at the Interaction Design Centre, University of Limerick, funded by the SHAPE Project within the European Union's 6th Framework Programme, Disappearing Computer Initiative. His PhD conceptualised and explored the educational design of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp), contributing to the development of a model for the principled, participatory design of ubicomp to enhance learning in museums and informal education.
Tony's primary degree is in physical education and English teaching from the University of Limerick, and he also holds a Master of Information Technology from the National University of Ireland, Galway. He was previously a secondary school teacher of physical education, English, mathematics and ICT; a school ICT coordinator; and post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Learning Sciences Research Institute, University of Nottingham. As part of his post-doctoral education, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering, Tony was also a visiting researcher in educational design at the Center for Informal Learning and Schools (CILS), The Exploratorium: The Museum of Science, Art and Human Perception, San Francisco.
Alongside educational technology, ICT, English and design-based research, Tony also teaches and maintains research interests in disciplines that provide a critical insight into, and foundation for designing educational change, innovation and technology, particularly the history and philosophy of education.
