Biography

As Gaeltacht Bhaile Ghib i gContae na Mí do Lesa Ní Mhunghaile ó dhúchas. Bhain sí céim BA sa Ghaeilge agus sa Ghearmáinis amach in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh, i 1994. Mar chuid den chéim sin chaith sí an bhliain acadúil 1992-93 sa Rheinisch-Friedrich-Willhelms Universität, Bonn, ar scoláireacht fochéime de chuid an DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). Bhain sí Ard-Dioplóma sa Chumarsáid Fheidhmeach amach in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh i 1995 agus céim PhD sa Nua-Ghaeilge i 2002. Bhí sí fostaithe mar iriseoir físe le Nuacht TG4 idir 1996 agus 2001. Tá tréimhsí caite aici ag léachtóireacht i gColáiste Mhuire gan Smál, Luimneach, agus i gColáiste San Aingeal, Sligeach. Bhí sí ina heagarthóir Gaeilge ar an iris Eighteenth-Century Ireland/Iris an dá chultúr idir 2005-2011. Tá réimhse leathan alt scríofa aici ar ghéithe éagsúla den chaidreamh idir lucht an chinsil agus saíocht na nGael san ochtú agus sa naoú haois déag agus ar an scríobhaí Ultach Muiris Ó Gormáin. I measc a foilseachán tá Charlotte Brooke’s Reliques of Irish Poetry (Dublin: Irish Manuscripts Commission, 2009) agus Ré Órga na nGael. Joseph Cooper Walker (1761-1810)(Indreabhán: An Clóchomhar, 2013), a bhain Duais ACIS Leabhar Taighde na Bliana Fhoras na Gaeilge 2014 amach. Tá spéis ar leith aici in oidhreacht liteartha Oirialla agus tá eagrán nua de Amhráin na Midhe le hÉnrí Ó Muirgheasa á réiteach aici don chló faoi láthair.

Lesa Ní Mhunghaile grew up in the Breac-Ghaeltach Baile Ghib in Co. Meath. She was educated at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, Bonn, Germany. She worked as a video journalist (iriseoir físe) with Nuacht TG4 from 1996 until 2001 and was a post-doctoral research fellow in the Moore Institute, NUI, Galway, between 2001 and 2004 where she was employed on the Ascendancy and the Gaelic World Project. In 2004 she established the B.Ed. in Home Economics and Irish degree in St. Angela’s College, Sligo. Between 2005 and 2013, she lectured in the Department of Irish at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick. She has been a lecturer in Gaeilge in NUI, Galway since September 2013. 

Research Interests

Contact between Anglo-Irish antiquarians and the Gaelic world; the eighteenth- and nineteenth Irish-language scribal tradition; the Gaelic revival, particularly the life and works of Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha and Énrí Ó Muirgheasa; the Oriel poetical and scribal tradition;  the Ossianic ballad tradition.
