Biography

Máirín Ní Dhonnchadha is Established Professor of Old and Middle Irish and Celtic Philology (Sean- agus Meán-Ghaeilge agus Teangeolaíocht Cheilteach) at NUI Galway.  She was educated at University College, Cork (BA in Celtic Studies, MA in Old and Middle Irish, PhD in Old and Middle Irish), Jesus College, Oxford, and the School of Celtic Studies of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS).  Before coming to NUI Galway in 1996 she had been an Assistant Editor at the Royal Irish Academy's Foclóir na Nua-Ghaeilge, a lecturer in Modern Irish at University College, Dublin and Trinity College, Dublin, and an Assistant Professor at the School of Celtic Studies, DIAS.

She has published widely on various aspects of medieval and modern Gaelic language and literature, and is keen to mediate Gaelic tradition to a broad audience. Her best-known work is probably her contribution as author and co-editor to The Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing Volumes IV and V: Irish Women's Writings and Traditions (2002).

She is Director of the Centre for Antique, Medieval and Pre-Modern Studies (CAMPS) at NUI Galway.

She is Director of the MA in Old and Middle Irish, and is currently supervising PhDs on the following topics: the Céili Dé in medieval Ireland; literature concerning the 7th-century Connacht king, Guaire Aidni; wooing-tales (tochmarca); and a lexicographical digitalised analysis of Máirtín Ó Cadhain's fiction.

Research Interests

Editing and close reading of medieval and early modern Gaelic prose and verse texts.  Study of Gaelic literary tradition in the pre-modern period, including issues of genre, gender, hybridisation, patronage and provenance.  Medieval to Modern Gaelic language and lexicography.  Aspects of early Irish history.

Máirín Ní Dhonnchadha welcomes enquiries regarding the MA in Old and Middle Irish, and PhD enquiries on all aspects of pre-modern Gaelic language, literature and culture.
