Archives

Archives are vital to the academic mission of the University. Holdings at the James Hardiman Library at NUI Galway include the Douglas Hyde manuscripts, Galway’s municipal records dating from 1484, the literary archive of John McGahern, and a wealth of material in theatre, film and the performing arts, with a particular focus on companies such as the Druid Theatre, Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe and the Lyric Players Theatre in Belfast. A major project to digitise the archive of the Abbey Theatre is currently in progress. Complementing the archives are special collections, whose particular strengths include folklore, Irish-language materials and travel literature relating to Ireland.
