Biography

Oceanography is not only a career it is a huge part of my life. I graduated top of my class with a first class honours in Marine Science (BSc) and my PhD involved extensive original research on ocean acidification, an emerging global problem often referred to as ‘the evil twin of climate change’. During my PhD I was the lead chemical oceanographer on thirteen research surveys and helped in the establishment of a laboratory capable of producing high quality carbonate chemistry data. I am the lead author on a number of peer-reviewed articles related to ocean acidification in Irish waters and have contributed to key national and international reports on ocean climate change (MI report, EPA, ICES 2014).   I have continued to lead ocean acidification research in Ireland in my current post-doctoral project where I have produced a baseline dataset of seasonal inorganic carbon data in estuarine waters. I was also awarded a Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship in 2013 which allowed me to collaborate with one of the world’s leading carbonate chemists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego. The Fulbright Program is a highly competitive, merit-based grant for international educational exchange for scholars to study, research or teach in the U.S. This scholarship allowed me to develop my analytical skills of ocean acidification parameters, skills that I have brought back to teach in Ireland. I have participated in many science outreach activities to communicate ocean science to the public and have discussed ocean acidification research on the national television documentary series Eco Eye. I have recently given a TEDx presentation on ocean acidification at the TEDx Fulbright Dublin event in 2016,  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m1X26Auw6Q. My long term career goal is to become a leading researcher in the important and rapidly emerging field of marine carbon chemistry through contribution to global research programmes. I hope to collaborate with high-profile research groups and expand my network of key research associates at a national and international level.
