Biography

Dr Tom Doyle is a marine biologist with expertise in jellyfish and animal biotelemetry (satellite tracking). He is author of 43 scientific publications and has a h-index of 22 (Google Scholar). He is internationally recognised in the field of gelatinous zooplankton (jellyfish), with expertise in the socio-economic impacts of jellyfish (especially salmon aquaculture interactions) and mapping the broadscale distribution and abundance of key gelatinous groups. He has deployed satellite tags, data loggers and acoustic tracking devices on various marine species (sea bass, blue sharks, sunfish, leatherback sea turtles and even jellyfish) to determine animal movements, migration patterns and behaviour. More recently Tom began research on marine litter and microplastics (sources of marine litter, ingestion and food web transfer of microplastics).

Other Activities

  Description

Dr Doyle has actively engaged the media to increase the dissemination of his research and to raise the profile of the CMRC and UCC. For example, >50 articles have been written about his research in in local and national newspapers (inc. The Irish Times, The Examiner, The Sunday Tribune, BBC Wildlife Magazine) and he has made regular appearances on local and national radio (inc. Morning Ireland, The Mooney Show, Pat Kenny Show and Moncrieff). In addition to the print and radio media, Tom has featured in several wildlife documentaries, most notably a 45 minute programme entitled “Searching for Ireland’s giant sea turtles” which documented his attempt to satellite tag a leatherback sea turtle off Dingle. Tom has also featured in BBC’s Coast, RTE’s Wild Migrations and more recently he appeared in two episodes of Colin Stafford Johnson’s ‘Living the Wildlife’ TV Series (RTE).
