Teaching Interests

Key Achievements:

  • I established the Bioinnovate programme at NUI Galway

  • I won the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2008

  • I initiated and led the development of a Science Foundation Course that realised a 10-fold increase in the number of mature entrants to Science and Engineering at NUI Galway

  • I directed the BSc Biotechnology (up to 2000), producing graduates of the highest calibre, including three President of Ireland Young Researcher (PIYRA) awardees

Below, I give details of some of the innovative courses and delivery methodologies I developed.

2010-2011            Led the development of the BioInnovate interdisciplinary Fellowship programme and the BioInnovate postgraduate modules (BIC I and BIC II) which are available across the academic partners, DCU, UCC and the UL.  Adapted the curriculum from the BioDesign programme and led the recruitment strategy prior to the appointment of the first Director, Dr. Mark Bruzzi.

2009-2010            Contributed to the CELT course CEL267 Postgraduate Research Supervision

2008-2012            Led the development of the Structured PhD programmes across the University and was centrally involved in the development of modules to develop transferable and generic skills for graduate students.  Liaised directly with the Burren College of Art in the development to the module on Creativity which is compulsory for all Hardiman scholars

2006-2008            Pre-clinical Vice Dean of Medicine and Coordinator of Biochemistry curriculum

I coordinated the implementation of the new systems-based medical curriculum across the disciplines of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology & Therapeutics and Physiology which was initiated in 2006.  I was a member of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Education committee.

2006-2007       Academic Director, B.Sc. in Science and Technology Studies

This is the first science degree programme in the University offered by blended learning. This modular programme is part-time and focuses on the knowledge and skill requirements of high-tech industries. The modular structure is designed with flexibility in mind.  It is delivered jointly with the University of Limerick under the auspices of the Atlantic University Alliance.  I was involved in developing the concept, curricular content and admission of students.

1999-2004            Proposed and established a Foundation Course in Science for mature students.  Developed the overall plan for the course curriculum and delivered the lectures on the Biology component.  Chaired the admissions committee for direct entry of students.

1992-2000                  Coordinator (1992-95) and Director (1995-2000) B.Sc. Biotechnology

This denominated degree course commenced in September, 1991 and I was responsible for the development of the overall philosophy, format and content of the programme from an outline course structure.  I developed and delivered the following modules:  Introductory computing, Seminar series for 2nd and 4th year students, 3rd year placement (including in international research institutions such as EMBL and IMP), and 4th year modules in Experimental Planning and Analysis, Immunotechnology, Signal Transduction, Apoptosis, Down-stream Processing and Tissue Culture. My average lecture and practical contact hours per year were 215 and 115, respectively. 

During this period, the course attracted the highest quality students in the Faculty (minimum entry points increased from 410 to 510 with a mean of 530), had the highest retention rate and graduated ~95% of students with an honours degree.  The graduate destinations of these students (for example, Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, EMBL), their subsequent research publications (Science, Nature, Cell, Embo J), award of three PIYRAs to graduates of this cohort, are clear indicators of the emphasis on research and the confidence gained by students who were then capable of performing at the highest level.
