Research Interests

Our research focuses on the specialized metabolites, also called natural products, produced by marine organisms and especially marine invertebrates like sponges, zoantharians, soft corals but also algae, microalgae, or cyanobacteria. While our main playground for biodiscovery is the North-eastern Atlantic and especially the Irish waters from the seashore until the deep sea, through collaborations with local marine biologists and ecologists, we work in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas or the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
We have expertise in the purification by HPLC and structure elucidation by NMR and MS of all types of specialized metabolites. Such natural products may find applications in the pharmaceutical, the cosmetical or agri-food sectors. Through the establishment of a National Marine Biodiscovery Laboratory in Ireland we strive for a strong collaboration between marine biologists, taxonomists, microbiologists, and chemists to organize a biological and chemical repository of marine products. We are also engaged in several projects in marine chemical ecology first to understand their metabolic pathways but also their ecological role in the environment. Although omnipresent, the chemical mediation in the marine environment is still very poorly understood. We develop new tools to point out the key role of some chemical cues in the structure of ecosystems. These findings may also find applications in several sectors like the aquaculture sector. These approaches are of special interest in the field of marine biotoxins. Under the impacts of anthropogenic activities and global changes the proliferation of non-indigenous species and especially toxic dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria affect local ecosystems through the production and release of specialized metabolites. The marine seafood sector is frequently under the threat of such toxic contamination. To address these basic and applied questions we want to apply the recent technological and more global approach called marine environmental metabolomics by mass spectrometry but also nuclear magnetic resonance.
