Dr Jonathan Egan, Lecturer above the bar in Clinical Psychology completed his BA (1992), MA in Applied Psychology (1993) and M. Psych. Sc, (Clin. Spec.; 1997) at University College Dublin. He worked in both Child and Family and Adult Mental Health services until 2000. In 2000, he became one
of the founding Directors of Counselling in the National Counselling Service for survivors of childhood abuse and neglect.  His doctoral research dissertation was on "Burnout in female counsellor/therapists of the National Counselling Service" (Hull, 2007).  In 2008 he became the Principal Clinical Specialist Liaison Psychologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin.   He has supervised over
20 trainee psychologists and has served on the Committee of the Clinical Division of the Psychological Society of Ireland between 2005 and 2018.  He now consults to the Pain Medicine Dept. at University College Hospital, Galway. He is also an  Explorative Goal Corrected Psychotherapist (McCluskey, York, 2017) and in 2020 was Certified as a CORE APT Psychotherapist (Kristin Osborn's (Harvard) Core APT training in Stockholm.

Research Interests

Jonathan is interested in developing reflective scientist practitioners for the field of Clinical Psychology.

He also has an interest in PTSD in people who have experienced trauma during childhood, as well as the effect this has on the psychologists working with them.  He is currently interested in an adult's perception of their ability to express themselves emotionally as children to their parents or caregivers and how this may affect their relationship with food intake or emotional eating.

Jonathan also enjoys examining the therapeutic exchange between client and therapist, as well as whether a given approach is effective or not.  He trained with Dr Una McCluskey (York) in relation to attachment therapy with adolescents and adults and his practice is informed by her theory. He works clinically with groups of patients who attend chronic pain in an out-patent pain medicine clinic at UCHG.
