Biography

Alison Forrestal completed her undergraduate studies at St. Patricks College, Maynooth, and Maynooth University, before completing an MA (research) in History at Maynooth University, and PhD in History at the University of Manchester.  She held lectureships at the University of Warwick and Durham University before taking up her position at NUIG in 2006.

Research Interests

Alison's interests lie in early modern Europe, particularly seventeenth-century France, and in the history of early modern Catholic culture and society. Her most recent project has focused on the career of Vincent de Paul and the development of the Congregation of the Mission (Lazarists) within the Catholic reform movement of seventeenth-century France, and she is now in the early stages of a new project on inter-generational religious identities amongst devout families of the Catholic Reformation.

She recently published The Frontiers of Mission: Perspectives on Early Modern Missionary Catholicism (ed. with Sean Smith) (Brill, 2016), and her latest monograph, Vincent de Paul, the Lazarist Mission, and French Catholic Reform,  was published this year by Oxford University Press:  https://global.oup.com/academic/product/vincent-de-paul-the-lazarist-mission-and-french-catholic-ref...

Alison would welcome enquiries from those interested in postgraduate research on seventeenth-century France, and/or the history of the Catholic church and Catholic religion and culture in early modern Europe.
