Biography

Dr Henrike Rau is a lecturer in Political Science and Sociology at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She studied sociology and psychology at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena and the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Dr. Rau’s research focuses on socio-cultural and political aspects of consumption, especially with regard to (un)sustainable transport patterns. She currently leads research on transport, mobilities and the ‘consumption of distance’ as part of ConsEnSus, an EPA Ireland-funded collaborative project between Trinity College Dublin and NUI, Galway on consumption, environment and sustainability (www.consensus.ie). Her other areas of expertise include environmental sociology, social-scientific and interdisciplinary sustainability research and cross-cultural studies. She is particularly interested in the implications of human time use for sustainability.

Recent publications include the edited collections ‘Environmental Argument and Cultural Difference: Locations, Fractures, and Deliberations’ (Oxford: Peter Lang, 2008, co-edited with Dr. Ricca Edmondson), 'Methods of Sustainability Research in the Social Sciences’ (London, SAGE, 2013, co-edited with Dr. Frances Fahy), 'Challenging Consumption' (London, Routledge, 2014, co-edited with Prof. Anna Davies and Dr. Frances Fahy) as well as peer-reviewed book chapters and articles in national and international journals such as Growth and Change, Journal of Consumer Policy, Environmental Politics, Local Environment and Nature & Culture.   
                                                                                                                                       
Henrike Rau is a member of the Sociological Association of Ireland (SAI), SCORAI Europe and the ISA-RC24 (Environment and Society) network. As a strong contributor to the sustainability research community at NUI, Galway, Dr. Rau has led the development of the Environment, Development and Sustainability research group in the social sciences since 2008. In 2010 she joined the Ryan Institute Strategy Committee as representative of the social sciences (http://www.ryaninstitute.ie/).

Research Interests

Dr. Rau’s research focuses on socio-cultural and political aspects of consumption, especially with regard to (un)sustainable transport patterns. She currently leads research on transport, mobilities and the ‘consumption of distance’ as part of CONSENSUS, a seven-year EPA Ireland-funded collaborative project (2009-2015) between Trinity College Dublin and NUI, Galway on consumption, environment and sustainability (www.consensus.ie). Her other areas of expertise include environmental sociology, social-scientific and interdisciplinary sustainability research and cross-cultural studies. She is particularly interested in the implications of human time use for sustainability.

My teaching responsibilities include various lecture courses and seminars in social research methods at undergraduate (approx. 250-300 students) and graduate level (approx. 15 students), SPSS labs for M.Litt./Ph.D. candidates (approx. 15 students) and 3BA Options courses in comparative sociology and environmental sociology (approx. 40 students). I also contribute to the 1BA introductory programme in Sociological and Political Studies (approx. 800 students), which includes lectures, seminars and a mentoring programme.

Other teaching obligations include a 5ECTS module entitled ‘Sustainable Development in Ireland’ for the MA programme in Community Development and guest lectures to students in cognate discipline areas at NUI, Galway (e.g. Economics, Geography). Since 2009 I have be involved in the organisation, development and delivery of the newly established Structured Ph.D. Programme in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies at NUI, Galway. I am currently a member of three NUIG Graduate Research Committees for PhD candidates in Geography (2) and Philosophy (1).

IIn 2010 I initiated and organised an Erasmus staff and graduate student exchange agreement between the School of Political Science and Sociology (NUI, Galway, Ireland) and the Institute of Social Ecology (AUU Klagenfurt-Vienna, Austria). In December 2011 I took part in the staff exchange and co-taught an MA/PhD module entitled ‘Qualitative approaches to sustainability research in the social sciences’ (with Prof. Ricca Edmondson, NUIG) to graduate students at the Institute of Social Ecology. The module was delivered over two weeks (5x four-hour block seminars, 20 direct contact hours in total). Prof. Edmondson and I developed an innovative and interactive team teaching approach specifically for this module, and in consequence received highly positive feedback from participants.

In December 2012 I delivered a two-day master class entitled ‘Sustainable consumption: Concepts and Cases’ to MA and PhD candidates and staff at the Institute of Social Ecology, Vienna, again under the Erasmus staff exchange scheme. This workshop introduced participants to key theoretical appproaches to sustainable consumption in the social sciences and explored recent efforts towards the governance of sustainable consumption.

My strong interest in society-environment relations and inter- and transdisciplinarity sustainability research has shaped my teaching philosophy and practice. I regularly adopt a problem-focused approach to teaching and learning. In addition, I frequently make use of real-world examples and case studies of environmental conflicts and sustainability projects to illustrate more abstract theories and concepts. I organise annual fieldtrips for undergraduate and postgraduate students that cover sustainable development initiatives in Ireland (e.g. Ecovillage Cloughjordan, Organic Centre Rossinver). Since the introduction of student evaluation of teaching in the mid-2000s at NUIG, I have consistently received highly positive feedback.
