Biography

Dr. Máire Ní Ríordáin is a Lecturer in Education in the School of Education, National University of Ireland, Galway. She is a graduate of Physical Education and Mathematics (BSc.(Hons.), 2005), and Mathematics Education (PhD, 2009) from the University of Limerick. A former post-primary teacher, she also has experience of local, national and transnational project work in the area of mathematics education, bilingualism (Irish/English) and mathematics teaching/learning, and mathematics teacher quality/qualification, as Senior Project's Officer (Mathematics) in the NCE-MSTL (National Centre for Excellence in Mathematics and Science, Teaching and Learning, 2008 - 2010) and as Head of Education at St. Patrick's College of Education, Thurles (2010-2012).

A lecturer in the School of Education since 2012, Máire is Director of a BA in Mathematics and Education, which qualifies specialist post-primary mathematics teachers. She is also Director of the Dioplóma Gairmiúil sa Mhatamaitic don Mhúinteoireacht (Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching), a DES funded CPD initiative for up-skilling post-primary teachers of mathematics, on which she teaches both mathematics and mathematics education modules.

Research Interests

My principal area of research is concerned with bilingualism (Irish and English) and language, and its influence on mathematics teaching/learning and cognitive development. My other areas of research include teacher quality/qualification, out-of-field teaching in mathematics and cross-curricular teaching (mathematics and science) utilizing technology.

Current Research:


M²EID - Mathematical Meta-level developments in English and Irish language Discourse - a research project investigating whether differences in languages, and their use, by bilingual mathematical learners have a differential impact upon cognitive (meta-level) mathematical processing, while recognising the social aspects of learning. Irish Research Council New Horizons Research Grant - €95,500 (commenced 1st February 2016). 


An evaluation of the Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching - undertaking an evaluation of the impact of the Diploma in developing teachers’ knowledge and assessing a blended learning approach to CPD delivery. Funded by the EPI-STEM - €20,000 (August 2013 - Present).

T-Pi: Teacher Professional Inquiry - Examining the implementation and use of action research in ITE and in CPD provision for in-service teachers. This research is being undertaken in collaboration with Prof. Brenda Capobianco (Purdue University).

SUIM² - Spreagadh na hUimhearthachta tríd Imeachtaí Múinteoireachta Muiníneacha - an analysis of mathematical discourse in Irish and use of language-as-resource in mathematics teaching by Irish-medium primary teachers. Funded by COGG - €30,000 (April 2013 - March 2015).

Examining mathematical discourse in Gaeilge -MELBA: Mathématiques à l'école en langue bretonne aujourd'hui - collaborative research project on the development of the mathematics register in Breton, in conjunction with the University of Renne, France (funded by MSHB, France, January 2013-2014). Examining the development of the mathematics registers and the mathematical discourses taking place in Irish/Breton- medium mathematics education.
