James Hardiman Library
Online learning students will have full access to the electronic resources at the James Hardiman Library in NUI Galway. Through the e-Library you will have access to a wealth of e-books, journals, specialist databases and resources.
Once registered as a student, you can access all online information resources from home. To use this service you need to know your student number and library pin and simply follow the database links from the Library Catalogue and login as directed.

Career Development Centre
The Career Development Centre offers a comprehensive range of guidance and information services to all the students who attend NUI Galway, assisting them in the management of their own career development.
The Centre provides information on areas such as postgraduate study and funding, particular occupations, further study and work worldwide. Employer information, an audio-visual section, career CD-ROMs, and psychometric testing are examples of some of the services provided for mature students.
Seminars are held on specific career areas, employability skills and postgraduate study. Seminars are also organized for particular focus groups, for example mature students. The computerized guidance service includes access to a virtual careers library via the website, www.nuigalway.ie/careers, where you will find further career information and useful contact details.
The Career Development Centre helps students with some of the following areas:
- Deciding what to do next – further study opportunities
- Finding out about options regarding degrees or subjects
- Obtaining career information
- Finding out how to develop skills that employers want
- Finding a job
- Providing information about career events.
Blackboard is the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) used in NUI Galway. In Blackboard you will find all your course information and materials, you will maintain contact with your fellow students and module tutors via the discussion forum facility, you will be able to upload all your module assignments when required and it also allows you the facility to collaborate with fellow students on group projects using many of the collaborate learning tools which it offers.
While much of the student-tutor interaction takes places in an asynchronous fashion (i.e. all are not required to be online at the same time), Blackboard also offers the facility to conduct synchronous classes where students and tutors are online at the same time. Blackboard functionality is used in a variety of ways by different tutors so during the course of your programme you will experience the Blackboard system through a variety of learning lenses.
