Biography:
| Diarmuid Griffin is a lecturer in Criminal Law and Criminology at the School of Law. He is currently engaged in doctoral research at the UCD Institute of Criminology. The research is an empirical project examining the decision-making process used in Ireland to determine when and under what conditions parole is granted to serious and long-term offenders, particularly those serving life sentences. In 2011, Diarmuid was a visiting scholar at the Centre for the Study of Law and Society, University of California, Berkeley and lectured at San Quentin State Prison, as part of the Prison University Project, which provides higher education to inmates. Previously, he was an intern with the Office of the Public Defender, San Francisco and acted as a consultant and legal expert for FRALEX (advising the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, 2007-2011), the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (2006-2009), Transparency International Ireland (2006-2008) and the European Forum for Restorative Justice project, ‘Restorative Justice and Crime Prevention.’ He has also acted as an external examiner to DIT (2006-2009).
