Biography

Edel Doherty is a lecturer within the Discipline of Economics at NUI Galway.  She completed her doctoral studies at NUI Galway in 2010 (2007-2010) and during this time she was a visiting scholar to the University of California, Berkeley.  Edel holds a primary degree in Public and Social Policy (International) and a M.A. Economics (both with First Class Honours). Edel's primary research interest is in health economics and she has previously worked on several projects in the area of environmental economics.  Her methodological interests include the application of the discrete choice experiment method and the econometric analysis of longitudinal datasets.

Research Interests

My research interests lie in applied health economics research and I have also undertaken a number of applied studies in the area of environmental economics.  I am interested in the application of microeconometrics and the discrete choice experiment methodology to address issues primarily in health and environment. In health economics, I have used microeconometric techniques to examine issues related to burden of disease, particularly around healthcare usage and the cost of illness, health inequalities and social exclusion.   I have worked on projects in the areas of obesity, chronic pain, vaccinations, dementia, mental health and population health. In environmental economics, I have mainly used non-market valuation methods, particularly discrete choice experiments, to examine preferences in areas such as recreation, water quality and agri-schemes.
