Who Teaches this Course
Requirements and Assessment
Our Foundation Diploma's run frequently throughout the year in various locations around Ireland and they include:
- Attendance at two 2-day workshops (with an interval of 3 weeks between the two workshops)
- Selected Module
- Submission of an assignment*
*You will be required to complete an assignment for submission to NUI Galway for assessment. The assignment relates to material covered in the modules and emphasises the practical application of this course material to work situations. You will be given written feedback on the assignment.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must normally have reached 21 years of age on 1st January of the calendar year of entry. Applicants under 21 years of age must satisfy the matriculation requirements of NUI Galway.
Applicants typically have appropriate experience in a training or educational organisation and must be in a position to undertake assignments and work-based projects relating to practical aspects of training or education. Applicants will be expected to have basic computer skill competence and should have access to the internet.

Train the Trainer-Essential Trainer Skills
This course enables you to develop the skills to deliver effective training courses. It is structured to allow you to gain an understanding of adult training and learning principles and to deliver courses that engage adult learners. You will learn how to:
- Analyse training needs
- Design and develop relevant training course materials and content
- Select and adopt engaging training methods to deliver effective training sessions
- Assess learning achievement
- Evaluate the overall effectiveness of a training course
Performance Sports Coaching
This course focuses on practical ways of improving performance in the field of sport. The emphasis is on developing the skills you require for effective face-to-face coaching aimed at enhancing individual sports performance. You will learn how to:
- Apply the key skills of an effective performance improvement coach to your practice
- Conduct performance gap analysis
- Develop your own coaching style
- Design and set performance standards
- Apply an effective model of coaching for performance improvement
Skills for Professional Development
This course focuses on the development of core competences that will contribute to your professionalism and your employment opportunities. You will learn how to:
- Assess your core skills to manage your professional development
- Communicate and present yourself effectively through verbal, written and digital communications
- Manage work relationships, work effectively in a team and plan resources
- Creatively solve problems, address concerns and make informed decisions
- Develop a strong CV that reflects your skills-set
Assessment: Theory & Practice
This course helps you develop the skills and knowledge necessary to design & develop a range of assessment strategies that are constructively aligned with learning outcomes and that comply with QQI (or equivalent) guidelines. You will learn how to:
- Develop a range of assessment tools for use in assessment plans
- Design assessment that is valid, reliable, fair and practical, that matches learning outcomes and that takes account of learner diversity
- Plan and implement assessment strategies that meet the requirements and standards of awarding bodies (e.g. QQI)
- Develop a marking rubric that assesses learning achievements against established standards
- Apply the principles of constructive feedback when assessing learning achievement
Further Education
Participants who complete one of the Foundation Diplomas in Training and Education may claim exemption from one of the modules in the BA in Training and Education.Why Choose This Course?

I would like to thank the sports unit of NUIG for providing a great course .The Performance Sport Coaching course was a great experience, it gave me a more detailed view on how sport can be viewed .The tutor was excellent and provided great documented information that we can always go back on .The vast experience of the coaches in the room was amazing .We spent a lot of time listening to their experience and from this alone I learned a lot. I would highly recommend coaches from all sports to attend this four day course.
