Arts with Global Languages
Course Overview
This innovative and highly flexible Languages degree allows you to study two languages, with the possibility of taking another language at Beginner’s Level in the First year. Linguistics, Translation Studies and Media are embedded at all levels of the programme. Literature and culture modules will be available for those students who wish to pursue a teaching career so that they will fulfil the requirements of the Teaching Council.
Year 3 of the programme is a structured year abroad, involving study at partner institution(s) or a combination of study at a partner institution and work placement.
Students may take short introductory courses in Chinese and modules in Latin will also be available.

Course Outline
Year one:
Students choose two languages in first year (one of which must be at post- Leaving Cert level). There is an option to study a third language or take Global Language Studies. In Global Language Studies, there are modules in Language Acquisition, in Translation and Linguistics, and in Media and Technology.
Year Two:
Students continue to take two languages (minimum).
Additional Study options include:
- Third Language
- Global Language Studies (from Second Year there are also culture modules available in this stream, as well as the modules on Translation and Linguistics and Media and Technology)
Year Three
You will spend Year three studying abroad or on a language assistantship.

Continued specialisation in a Third Language or in Global Language Studies
Languages Available:
The languages on offer are:
French and Irish can be taken at post-Leaving Cert level
Italian can be taken at Beginner’s level
German and Spanish can be taken at Beginner’s and post-Leaving Cert level
*Irish and Italian are in the same subject grouping and therefore cannot be taken together in the same year
*Short introductory courses in Chinese, and modules in Latin will also be available to students on this programme.
